In previous generations, your father or grandfather might have managed to stockpile phone books from neighboring communities to make it easier to find the businesses they needed.  Those days are gone and we can find what we need without newspapers and phone books.

In the internet age, your customers can be from anywhere,as can your competitors and nobody needs a phone book. If you serve only those customers who are familiar with your business or who are local to it, you are excluding the majority of potential new customers.

Google and Bing have changed the way customers and business find each other. They bring customers and businesses together through simple online searches. Customers search for a business that will meet their requirements and they will find the ones that the search engines present.

Local businesses are no longer bound by location; you can develop customers everywhere by creating an online presence.

For this internet search magic to work, a modern and mobile-friendly website is a good first step.  But if you have a great website that nobody can find, then it will not help your business.  It must be found by those searching using Google or other search engines. Your website should appear in the first few pages of the search engine results pages if it is to be found at all. There is only one first page of search results per search and that is where everyone wants to be.  Some have the skills and resources to get there; some do not.

Search Engine Optimization (or SEO) is an advanced technique used for decades to help businesses get their websites onto the first few search result pages.  Landau Consulting, a New Jersey SEO company which does consulting in internet marketing and SEO services has published this infographic to help your website get found instead of getting lost.
